FMNZ Managers Forum June 09 - Authenticity FMNZ Milestone 6 Exec Report June 09 FMNZ Certification and logos June 09 FMNZ Chairperson Report FMNZ 09 FMNZ Approved Local Stallholder
What is an Authentic Farmers’ Market? An Authentic Farmers’ Market is one which is full of locally grown and sourced food which is being sold by the producer.
How does this help? Given the recent success of farmers markets worldwide, many more farmers’ markets are popping up all over NZ. Some are using the farmer’s market brand to attract customers despite not actually being an authentic farmers market. As it is not possible to prevent other markets from using the name “Farmers’ Market”, having Authentic Markets and Certified Local Stallholders means that the customers know if you are genuinely a farmers’ market.
Farmers’ Markets New Zealand Inc. Farmers’ Markets New Zealand Inc. (FMNZ) provides the tools for managers and stall holders to run and operate a successful farmers’ market. Our aim is to make the process as easy as possible, and provide support where needed. Requirements of the Market Management The management of each farmers’ market is required to perform an audit on each stall holder and then verify that this stall holder is to be recognised as a certified local stall holder (defined above). Each stall holder is required to fill out the Certified Local Stallholder application form and return to their market manager, who collates all the applications and sends it to FMNZ. Stall holders and markets will gain an interim authenticity status for a period of 12 months, after which full authenticity status will be approved or declined depending on results of continued monitoring and random audits performed by FMNZ. If declined the market or stall holder can choose to improve practices and then reapply, or seek a different niche within the market place, and remove themselves from FMNZ membership. For stall holders that sell at more than one market they must file a separate form for each market. They need to prove beyond reasonable doubt that at your market the seller is the producer.
